Brazil 2014. Preparations heat up following release of Volke Finke’s 23 Man Squad
Supporters of the Indomitable Lions are in high spirits following an encouraging 2-2 draw between the team and the German national team last Sunday June 1 2014 in Monchengladbach, Germany. German coach Volke Finke managed to arrange the friendly against his country’s national team after officials of the Fecafoot Normalization Committee failed to get other country national teams to play a very weak Cameroon team. The Lions scored first through striker Eto’o Fils but the Germans replied in less than five minutes and increased the tally later. Cameroon later drew level before the match ended
There was nationwide euphoria across Cameroon following the draw because Germany now has one of the best playing football teams and are favourites to win the Brazil world cup along with favorites Brazil and Spain. Radio, TV and newspapers across the country lavished praises on the Lions despite the fact that the Lions still face multiple organizational problems and the players had to again battle to get paid enough bonuses from the bonanza money FIFA gives to each qualifying country.
The Lions are scheduled to play a farewell match against a weak Moldavia team on Saturday June 7 2014 at the Omni sport stadium in Yaounde before the team flies to Brazil where they will play in group A against host Brazil, Mexico and Croatia.
Henri Meyoube 59, popularly known as Ngando Pickett, unofficial mascot of the Lions is one of dozens of musicians who have released a song in praise of the Lions as they prepare to take part in a record seventh participation at the world cup. Ngando’s song “Brazil 2014” is now playing in various bars in the economic capital Douala and a video for the single will be released before this weekend. He will be on the official Cameroon delegation to the world cup but is still appealing to Prof Joseph Owona who heads the Normalization Committee to include at least four of the singers/dancers in his group because he cannot animate alone. “I am very proud of the Lions and I hope they do better during the Brazil world cup. We shall be there to support them”, Ngando told Iroko Magazine
