Kenyan born hisorian, poet, writer and film maker Ali Mazrui died yesterday October 12 2014 in the USA at the age of 81 after an illness.
Tributes have been pouring in for the Pan Africanist scholar, a passionate defendant of the African heritage and the abuses the continent has suffered mostly at the hands of westerners who arrived on the continent apparently to free it from “darkness”.
He has held senior positions in universities in his home country Kenya and was a professor at Binghamton University in New York at the time of his death. Like Chinua Achebe of “Things Fall Apart” fame who died last year, Mr Mazrui died teaching in the USA, far away from his home country which is not surprising considering that most renowned Africans denounce the west and its policies but still relocate there for economic reasons.
Kenyan president Uhuru Kenyatta said Africa had lost one of its greatest sons.
Prof Ali Mazrui is expected to be flown home for burial. He is survivived by his wife and six children.
