Cameroon musician Lapiro publishes prison diaries
Cameroon’s popular singer and activist, Lapiro de Mbanga, has published a book that recounts his years in prison in Cameroon.
Now living with his family in exile in America, Lapiro served three years, most of them in the New Bell prison in Douala, Cameroon’s economic capital. He was accused of inciting violence in Cameroon in February 2008 after the country’s long serving president Paul Biya changed the constitution to extend his iron grip on power.
Many critics say he was jailed for criticising President Paul Biya in one of his songs.
The book titled Lapiro Raconte Ses Proces ( The Ordeal of Lapiro) is published in French and comes with one CD containing 46 of the singer’s songs. A copy cost 15 euros or 30 US dollars.
