John Chow, a famous Chinese Canadian successfully earns more than forty thousands dollars monthly by blogging on his well famous site john chow.com. He is a run-away success story on the power and money the internet can generate.
Emmanue Mallo, 40 has been learning the same tricks John Chow uses to make his money and other tricks he has picked up for the last ten years. He now runs a number of software and hardware companies from His California USA base.
Mallo initially trained as a journalist but a series of adventures landed him on the streets homeless ten years ago. He quickly learned the power of the internet and eventually ended in the US.
Mallo is a self made Internet Entrepreneur who believes Africans are not using the full potential of the information super highway. He wants Africans to start treating the Internet like a business gateway and to stop using it for frivolous pursuits. He has been talking to Francis Ngwa Niba about his internet business and how it has made him wealthy beyond his wildest dreams.
Q How did you first get into Internet Marketing
When I first arrived America and while looking for a job, I met a young American who was already doing network marketing and he introduced me into the business. I learned quite a lot from him. I learned how to relate to people, create a network and use the internet and that network to make money. By 2006 I had already recruited about five hundred Africans in my network. Later on, I started selling on ebay. From the knowledge I had about networking and how to make money using the internet, I learned how in creating a website, you can basically do a lot of things making money in the process. I learned how to optimize websites using search engines, how to search and keep customers on the net, using emails to market products and services. I got very excited at the opportunities the internet was offering. I knew some eight years ago any serious businessman must master these basic internet skills if they wanted to succeed in any kind of business venture. I then invested a lot of energy and money in internet marketing and digital product creation.
Q I understand you later stopped ebay marketing and created a website based company eMallo International LLC?
In 2006, I was doing well on ebay. I introduced a product on ebay which was a combination of digital software and ebooks that people had used and discarded. With the help of internet marketing guruh Mike Filsame I bundled them together and started selling them on ebay and realized that could generate quite some sizable revenue. What I did at the point was to employ a lot of freelancers from different parts of the world to design a effective websites for me. I therefore combined those products and put them together on one website. I started selling those bundles on ebay to people who wanted to start different types of businesses. As you will expect, the market eventually got saturated because I sold products to people who in turn also sold the same products to others and also on ebay. That is when I knew I had to move on with new ideas and products and services that will ensure a steady income flow. By the time I came up with new ideas, it was 2008 and the financial crisis that hit America and the rest of the developed world. I crashed like a lot of other businesses. At that point, I started blogging heavily and at a certain point I was managing forty bogs targeting a variety of niches. I learned more business tricks on how to use the internet to raise cash. I decided to re-brand myself and came up with the concept and company I named eMallo International LLC.
Q Let’s talk then about emallo.com and the products and services you started providing at this point in your internet marketing adventure
eMallo International LLC is a software company. We specialize in developing software, hardware and computer technology. We do some of the things that microsoft and Apple deal in. We are preparing to launch a couple of next generation products that will competes with Apple and Microsoft products. The company presently has a couple of products in the market though still being beta tested. One of them which is relatively new is eJob Freelancer. eJobFreelancer.com is one of the major e-products that took my internet business experience to a different level. I have had to use a lot of freelancers through the years to build and maintain my various businesses. I created a lot of relationships with these freelancers which is why I decided to develop a freelancing site. Our company sees a paradigm shift with this product. The way we look at freelancing now is unlike anything we have seen. Young people who want more freedom, university students and companies are excited about this opportunity we have created.
Another product we have is the Rhinofon. This is is a VOIP (Voice Over the Phone) you can use to make very cheap internet calls. It has a lot of features including sms, video calls, video chats, gaming, file sharing and phone calls. All you need to do is download the software on your smartphone or desktop and you can make phone calls at an amazingly cheap rate. The application works with any type of cell phone and computers. We also have a web hosting service which includes cloud hosting and domain name registration. The prices of eMallo Hosting are relatively cheap because we want people to create websites and through that, they can use the effective power of the internet for anything they want to do. We also presently working on eMallo TV a service where you can stream audio, video and Internet Television. Let’s say you want to run your own personal internet television service, you can subscribe with us and do that. Our IT department is developsing an email marketing system called iMallo Mail which is likely going to be the best in the world. Our company comprises of a team of young talented researchers, designers and developers working round the clock on a variety of other products which will be released progressively.
Q Each of the products you mention are huge in themselves and involve huge support staff to run them. Practically, how do you sell these varied products?
Emallo International LLC has five different branches operating from different places around the world. Fortunately or unfortunately, we have to operate that way because each department is huge in itself. The web hosting department in itself has a big server that hosts our various websites and websites of our customers. We have a specialized team and director that handles those operations. The Rhinofon has its own specialized department with five staff who work round the clock to handle it’s operations. The telephone service is not yet up and running but our IT department is working round the clock to make sure it gets operational soon. Our company therefore is broken up into small departments that can be easily managed. Our IT department has very young and talented programmers, developers, designers, researchers and content writers. We have offices in India, the United States and Estonia. We are constantly looking for new talents to employ and new opportunities to expand our services in other pats of the world including Africa. We will soon have an office in the Uk, Canada and some parts of Africa. The US really houses our administrative department and has four workers.
Q You are originally from Cameroon in Africa, how can the continent benefit from your company?
I am a bit troubled because up till now, Africa is not benefiting from our services. Living in the United States where I know just how information technology is changing peoples’ lives and coming from Africa where very few people benefit from the internet, I feel very bad. I know exactly what Africa is missing. As an African, I will like to help my fellow Africans to get used to and benefit from the internet. It is my duty to do so. In my small way, I want to teach them how to use the internet and generate money from it. On a very personal front, I have taught a couple of Africans how to make money online. We are hoping our new software and product eJob Freelancer will help get work for many Africans. Africans must know the power of creating networks on the internet and using those networks to get money. The first step is getting a website and I want as many Africans as possible to get one. We provide free web hosting and cheap domain name registration. Let me say here and now that to get an effective network on the internet is not a day’s job. You develop the network, you nurture it and you do that almost every other day.
Q You talk of creating relationships and maintaining them on the internet. How do you create and maintain relationships with people you never met, basically faceless people?
That is where the art of communications comes in. This is the truth about success. ” the money that will make you successful is found some where in another man’s pocket. You have to learn the art of communication to be able to get it out of the person’s pocket into yours without cheating or stealing.” We human beings are selfish, you know that. People pay attention to those who pamper to their needs. You need to identify what people want and work towards providing that good or service to them. As an internet entrepreneur, you need to know exactly what a person wants, connect to them, listen to them and give them exactly what they want; you will get rewarded for that effort. Nobody will buy from you if they don’t even know your name. Unfortunately in the past it is who you know that mattered but now it is who knows you and what you do that counts. You need to go out there with what you do and make yourself known before you can make a dime.
Q I guess social media plays a big part in building internet relationships?
You just can’t avoid that. I was one of the first people who joined Myspace when it started years ago. Most of the people I met then are still my friends today. Social media came out of concepts from Africa. We had what we call tontins or njangi’s in Africa. Those are concepts Myspace and facebook used to good effect. So why do we start something like that and different people are using it today? Anyway, it’s not too late. Africans now need to create those websites, join social media, create relationships, make email lists and stay in contact with the people you meet online, get to know them and I bet you, you can sell anything you have to them. There was a time I was broke and even wanted to cut my dread locks and sell though hahahaha!
Q While hoping Africans join the information superhighway, you appear to forget just how bad internet connections are in Africa, you forget sometimes there is no power for days on end.
We all know you have those basic problems in Africa but remember the internet is about timing and commitment. I started using the internet in Africa. I met my wife through the internet. While my friends were using their limited resources doing different things, I used mine to concentrate to find business contacts on the internet. Through that, I met an American lady I later married. Some of my friends were shocked when they realized I was more interested in using money to pay to get internet access and not on alcohol or women. This eventually paid off and has led to where I am now. I know the internet is problematic in Africa but we cannot let problems stop us from being who we want to be. It is problems that makes me the most money. If you master the art of creating solutions out of problems you will never be unemployed or broke. Africans should just go there and use the time they have judiciously. The internet is good to send out emails but do more constructive things while you are on it. You don’t go there to play games. The internet is a business place
Q Unlike a physical shop, it looks as if you need a much longer time to build an internet business?
Yes and No. It’s all about spending your time judiciously. You must be strategic. Unlike a physical shop where you must stock every other week or month, with internet marketing, things work differently depending on what you are doing. I have internet based businesses I set up years ago which are still paying me residual income today. I don’t need to do anything again. I did the hard work a long time ago. This can only happen on the internet. Look at this, sometimes you don’t even need money to start an internet business. You just need an internet connection. Let me explain one example. Almost every business has what you call affiliate programs; they are usually free to set up and run. They are usually complete businesses in a box with all sorts of marketing tools. All you need is looking for a good one, set up a free account, get your own store and products links to market and go out there and share to friends and target groups to generate sales for the company products; say Apple or any other company, you get paid each time anybody buys a product because of you. You get a commission. So if you have created affiliate accounts and have a lot of friends or a solid optin list you have created online, you can get them to buy those products and you get a commission for your troubles. I know thousands of people making a lot of money from affiliate marketing.
Q You make internet marketing sound easy but it looks like you need to put in long working hours a day, you sometimes need to burn the midnight candle?
Absolutely. I put anything between fifteen to seventeen hours each day to co-ordinate my various operations around the would. The work never ends. But remember, it can be very good fun. You need to enjoy what you are doing. One thing I learn from late Steve Jobs the founder of Apple is that to be successful you need to do what you like doing because no body quits what they like doing. Just learn to improve on what you do and do it exceptionally well. Take an old idea and creatively play with it exceptionally and you will attract people to use it.
Let’s take eJob Freelancer for example. Freelancing has existed for hundreds of years though used by very few people. With the power of internet technology and the behavioral pattens of young people when it comes to work and freedom, we gave freelancing a lift and made it a more user friendly tool for people who have skills anywhere in the world; and employers looking for cost effective ways to get their work done. I can assure you eJob Freelance is gong to be the “NEXT BIG THING” in the world because we have combined the power of the internet enabling people anywhere in the world to get jobs from employers anywhere in the world without having to displace themselves as it has been in the past. The opportunities that are not in Africa are available in Europe. Some one in Africa can have that opportunity with just a click of the mouse. eJob Freelancer provides all the tools needed to make this happen for everyone. How cool is that?
Q What advice will you give to Africans who will also want to do internet business. What will you tell them to do and what to avoid?
The most important thing I will tell them is to do what they love doing. They must have a passion for what they do. If you can’t do something well, train first. Never be in a hurry and do not let anyone push you around. Your job is to save yourself from the wiles of the universe. So be aware of that all the time and try to do what’s right once. I learned this lesson the hard way. I was always in a hurry and I failed in doing things right. And when I fail I hurt the people I love and care for, because I will not be able to care for them as I should. Now I want to take my time to do anything once, because time wasted cannot be collected. All the time I regret the time I have wasted failing to do things right. Take time to do anything right.
Also, whatever they choose to do, they must put in their best effort and make sure they are the best. People will realize how passionate you are about what you do and will do most things you ask them to do. Also, they must learn to associate with successful people. If you want to be big tomorrow, you need to associate with rich people, if you associate with poor people, you will remain poor. Use the internet to create your network, the rest will come to you.
Q On average, how long does it take to start creating those networks before you can start making money?
That depends. I know Africans are very smart and they can succeed on the internet too. Despite the issues they will face because they are Africans, they can still succeed. Some people will take two years, some will take twenty. The important thing is to be consistent in what you do. Do not give in to criticisms or pressure from family and friends. At times it is very frustrating to build a business talk less of building an online business where the competition is stiff. You need time and space to focus. Set target goals beginning with long term and short term goals. Short term goals should help you foot your day today bills while long term goals are plans for your success. Do what you like doing, have a passion for it and do it better than the next person. Find a very good reason why you are doing it and make it clear to everyone around . Your success is guaranteed if you follow those basic rules.
