Former radio presenter cum rapper Nabil aka Nabstar is back after a self imposed musical break with the release of a street anthem “confirm”, a record of some of the experiences that have shaped his life.
He has done most things in the entertainment industry from hosting radio shows to events organization and has witnessed the rapid evolution in the Cameroon music industry, largely driven by the booming Nigerian music sector.
The video of “confirm” is aimed at demystifying Nabil and “portraying him as an artist from the streets building his legacy by living his dreams.” It is a montage of some shows he has performed in Europe and features DJ Eppz, DJ Cool, Bayo of Motherland. He has just finished an Extended Play (EP-musical that is longer than a single but not enough to make an album) His album will be released soon.
Francis Ngwa has been talking to Nabstar about his new single and related matters.
Q What is the inspiration behind the song “confirm”
The inspiration behind the Confirm song is my life experiences – real stories about my life and places I have been to.
Q What do you think is responsible for the recent resurgence of Cameroonian music and the explosion in hip hop and rap musicians?.
A. I really can’t say, if you ask me I think it’s the fact that Cameroonians are actually ready to consume Cameroonian rap and hip hop! I think the media and the public have just shone a light on a culture that has always been alive in the dark and also competition is a hip hop sport, with the emergence of new artists, lots more will come out of their shell.
Q Is this an indication Makossa/Bikutsi are now out of fashion?
No, not at all. It’s just a new day in the Cameroonian musical world one we have actually been talking about for a long time. It was inevitable.
Q Is Nabstar a one day wonder boy, here today and never heard from again
No! I have been around for 10 years, touching every aspect of Afro hiphop – from media personality to a recording artist to an event organiser! At the moment, I have just finished my EPs and I am working on an album. If I was around for the most difficult years when most people didn’t pay any attention to the movement you can bet I will be around for more years to come doing more music, media stuff, events organizing and even movies soon!
