Fans have reacted with joy after Paul Okoye indicated on facebook that the “storm” in the P Square “teacup” has been resolved.
“Finally God’s will is done. FOREVER PSQAURE”, Paul posted. Fans will only believe this when the twin brothers start performing together again and will watch for any signs of discord the next time hey appear in public again. Our story about the genesis of the crisis below however still stands.
They are still two of the most famous and richest musical brand from Africa but more than a week after news first broke about a possible split in the Okoye’s family, the crisis is far from over. Attempts to reconcile the warring family so they can continue reaping from their lucrative Square brand have still not bore any fruit.
At the centre of the crisis in the family are two women, one death and the second one alive. Mrs Josephine Okoye, mother of eight children including the famous duo, died almost three years ago on July 11 2011 following heart surgery but she still has a powerful influence over her famous children. She never supported the relationship between Peter and Lola Omotayo (41) who is eight years older than him and who now has two children with the half of the singing twin siblings. Lola describes herself as “ a public figure” on her facebook page and following the backlash against her as fans continue blaming her for the crisis in the Square family, she posted this on her facebook page on Tuesday April 22 2014
“I’m a lady of substance though I have my shortcomings. I might not be loved by everyone but the people that matters (sic) to me hold me in high esteem and thats good enough for me”.
Paul Okoye, elder brother and manager of the twins in respect of their mother’s memory is reportedly not even on speaking terms with Lola and refused to attend their wedding last year. Paul too has refused to accept Lola like most members of the family. Following intervention from close family, friends and Nigerian music industry bosses, Peter and Paul are now on talking terms but Peter insists he will only accept reconciling with his siblings if they finally accept his wife and life partner Lola and give her the respect she deserves.
Paul kicked off the speculations when he initially twitter “after 10yrs it’s over. Am done”. There are signs the massive publicity the very public disagreement of the brothers and attempts to reconcile them might be bearing fruit. In a recent post on his facebook page, Paul posted; “after the storm comes the calm. Hoping for better days ahead as one family. God’s intervention”.
With Peter still refusing to take part in any concerts and working on any new songs, all immediate projects including concerts have been put on hold as the family struggles to resolve their problems under massive public scrutiny. In the end, their dwindling bank balance and the natural bonds of any family might eventually prove too strong and the brothers will patch their difference and start doing what their fans wish and expect of them-sing and dance and get paid handsomely for their troubles. There are already indications wherever they decide to perform together after this crisis will be a massive sell out because of the publicity news of their possible breakup has generated. Music promoters will be dying to sign the Square brothers for their first gig, post the break up troubles.
