Wax Dey has spent the last years travelling the major cities of South and West Africa bringing pleasure to tens of thousands of music fans. Singing mostly story songs in English and pidgin English, in what has often been described as an upbeat cheerful note, he is particularly optimistic about the state of the entertainment industry on the continent.
Iroko Africa caught up with him between engagements as he prepared to fly from Douala, Cameroon to South Africa on the promotion tour of his new album Number One Girl and squeezed in a ten minute interview.
Q-When did you start playing music?
A -I’ve been playing music for fun for the past nine years. Three years ago, I took up music professionally.
Q How would you present yourself to someone who has never met you?
A I’m a singer and a producer. I’m a doer. I’m the kinda guy that gets up and goes with an idea, making things happen. I’m not an office person. I love action. I’m very passionate and I love people. My greatest weakness is not knowing when to say NO and my greatest strength is the creative power of my mind.
Q- What are the favourite songs and videos you have released?
A- I love the song I don see my wife I did with Dontom – the production process was quite cool – we are both meeting in South Africa and coming back to release it in west africa –
I think I was also in the same headspace when I did ‘Will You be my wifey’.
But my favourite song for myself must be ‘Miss Real, Mr Regular’ coz I think it’s pretty deep.
Q -What plans have you got for the rest of 2013?
A -In 2013 , I’m arranging the release of the album NUMBER ONE GIRL, the soundtrack of my same-titled reality tv show, in Cameroon and South Africa. I also need to finalise preparations for season 2 of the show, which should kick off in February 2014.
Q -Which other artists would you like to collaborate with?
A -I’d love to work with 2face… he looks like a really cool guy. And Akon.
